Thomas Alexandrovich de Hartmann (1885-1956) was born near Kiev, degree in 1908 at the Conservatory of St. Petersburg, studied until 1912 with Felix Mottl, the former musical director of the Munich opera, and was, together with his close friend Kandinsky a member of the "Blue Rider". In 1916 he followed Gurdjieff on a new twelve-year journey to France. There he worked as a composer and was a close friend of Pablo Casals. After Gurdjieff's death, he promoted his teachings in the U.S
