Mystery Diagnosis: Young Adrian Martinez has always had a pinkish birthmark on his leg and has learned to deal with it. But when he is twelve years old, he develops hotness, unusual swelling, and pain in his right leg. His leg grows so much that after he starts high school, it weighs about one hundred and fifty pounds and it limits his ability to walk. Doctors think he has elephantiasis, but when Adrian also develops foul-smelling pimples on his right leg, it turns out that actually, he has a rare form of a blood disorder called Klippel Trenaunay Syndrome (KTS). Guidance counselor Kathy McFadden starts having swollen ankles, pain in her legs, a rash and blisters on her leg, extreme weight loss, weakness, fatigue, and eventually, diabetes. It turns out that she has been suffering from a rare tumor on her pancreas called a glucagonoma.
