This World: In America, thousands of prisoners are locked up in solitary confinement for years, even decades. In this documentary for the This World strand, director Dan Edge follows the new warden of Maine State Prison over the course of six months as he tries to reform the system and release some of the most dangerous inmates back into the general population. He faces not only resistance from his staff, but also has to tackle a culture that has always emphasized punishment over rehabilitation.
